Commissioning of the First OSMOSUN Desalination Unit in Morocco in the Guelmim-Oued Noun Region
In 2024, OSMOSUN commissioned its first solar-powered desalination unit in Morocco. The fresh water produced by this unit, installed in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region for the company SAND TO GREEN, will be used to irrigate a 38-hectare ecological plantation in the Moroccan desert as part of a regenerative agriculture project.
Founded in 2022, the Franco-Moroccan company SAND TO GREEN has developed an agroforestry model inspired by oases, aimed at reversing soil degradation to make desert land fertile. This model is based on the combination of three elements: agroforestry software, plant engineering, and the use of unconventional water sources (brackish groundwater). It is for the treatment of this water that SAND TO GREEN enlisted OSMOSUN.
OSMOSUN has therefore installed an OSMOSUN 6 BW unit capable of producing up to 140 cubic meters of fresh water per day. The water, sourced from underground brackish aquifers, is treated and used to irrigate 31 hectares of fig, pomegranate, and carob trees, along with plants such as geranium and rosemary. Maintenance of the installation will be carried out by OSMOSUN Morocco teams. Additionally, a brine management experiment is underway, involving the cultivation of 7 hectares of halophyte plants, forage crops, and trees.
